Choosing the right makeup artist for your production is key when building a team. An experienced makeup artist working in print advertising needs to work with the client, director, photographer, and team to design attractive makeup looks that compliment the branding and feel of each particular shoot. Whether you are shooting ads, campaigns, print advertising, catalog work, internal videos, or annual reports, the ultimate goal is to get noticed and connect with your audience, so having a skilled and seasoned team will give you a huge advantage.
Most clients ask me for fresh and polished makeup or a “no-makeup” makeup look. I learned early on that restraint in this field is essential, as makeup is an element that can easily make or break the outcome of a shoot. Hiring a qualified artist with a clean aesthetic, a good eye, and lots of production experience will pay off more than just any artist off of Instagram since this field plays by its own rules outside of the social media world. Remember, Makeup should complement but never overshadow.
I usually do both makeup and light hairstyling on smaller productions but often work with dedicated hairstylists on sets, so teamwork and creating a cohesive look is extremely important to deliver top-notch results. Productions are almost always on tight schedules, so product knowledge, longevity techniques, speed, efficiency, focus, and an artist that will not crumble under pressure go a long way.
Precise technique and an understanding of color science, such as how makeup looks under studio lighting vs. natural light, is fundamental and insures the talent never looks washed out, greasy, or too harsh. I prefer to stay on-set to eye every detail and hair is in its place, so the outcome of the images is as perfect as possible with minimal retouching necessary in post-production.
