Redfin's Small Makeup Room Ideas to Incorporate in Your Home

Every makeup enthusiast knows how important it is to have a special place in your home to apply and store your makeup. However, creating a beauty area that is organized and stylish can be challenging - especially if you're low on space. The good news is, there are many ways to create a makeup room in your home that don’t require a lot of space.

To help you get started, we have reached out to makeup and beauty experts from New York, NY, to Los Angeles, CA, to share their best small makeup room ideas. Read on to see what they had to say.

1. Place your vanity in front of a window

My number one tip would be to position wherever you’ll be doing makeup in front of a window for the natural light and incorporate a desktop mirror with one side that is magnified. If makeup is done in natural light, it’ll look good in any lighting situation. - Rouge 9

2. Use decorative jars to store products

Keep all your favorite products and tools within arm's reach by organizing them into decorative jars right on your vanity. I keep all of the daily products I use like my brushes, brow pencils, and mascara in them so I don’t have to go digging through my drawers to find them. They’re always right there in front of me, easy to just grab and use. - Brittney Eileen Beauty

3. Create a personal makeup station

The focal point of every beauty room is a well-lit mirror and a vanity or dresser to store your beauty products. The key is to create a makeup station that’s like your own personal makeup store—organize products by family so that you can easily shop your makeup collection and create a fluid workstation for yourself. - Salt Spell Beauty

4. Invest in good lighting

When thinking about creating a perfect beauty room in your home, first and foremost, you need to think of lighting. Setting up your vanity in front of a window will give you the best lighting - but it’s not always possible. The market nowadays is full of lit vanity mirrors, and you can always choose the one that allows you to control the light temperature so that it's the closest to daylight. Also, your storage setup is very important. You might want to opt-in for a desk with drawers to store your makeup and skincare in, and don't forget to invest in plastic drawer organizers because they'll keep your drawers neat and you'll always be able to find the product you're looking for. - Evie Ry

When creating a beauty room in your home, lighting should be your first priority. Nothing beats natural light, so be sure to have your vanity facing a window if possible, and invest in a makeup mirror that simulates daylight, like an all-in-one makeup mirror and ring light. - Makeup By Shary

Lighting is key when creating a space for glamming. Your best bet is to choose a room with ample natural light and you’ll want to face your makeup table toward that light. If you don’t have much natural light in your space, you can opt for a makeup light- make sure it’s a soft natural white light, or as close to natural light as possible. -  Beauty Brigade LLC

5. DIY your space-saving solutions

Plastic organizers are the best DIY space-saving solution, not to mention they make everything look clean: there are options that offer taller sizes for your brushes and shorter sizes to showcase lipsticks. If you're tight on space, grab a stackable or "tower" organizer. For decor, I encourage mixing and matching colors and textures while showcasing the focal point of the room: your vanity. - Yzabella B., Enrollment Specialist, Online Makeup Academy

6. Create a space that inspires you

When it comes to makeup, your face is your canvas, and every artist needs a proper workshop; make your beauty room a haven of artistry and practicality by following two fundamental principles: illumination and organization. Use natural lighting whenever possible or invest in a vanity mirror with LEDs to mimic natural light; you can’t blend foundation or add contour without light properly illuminating your canvas. You’ll also want to utilize a vertical organizing system for all your makeup and tools to optimize space, but most importantly, make your beauty room a place that inspires you. - Jena Fine, The Makeup Academy New York City

Makeup rooms don’t have to take up a lot of space. For the most part, you’ll only need a table with drawers, good lighting, and a chair. For vanity mirrors, look for a table with lots of small drawers where you can organize and your chair should be very comfortable and the perfect height for your table. Finally, decorate the room in an aesthetic that inspires you so it becomes a magical and relaxing part of your daily routine. - Alena B., Lead Instructor, Online Makeup Academy

7. Ensure your plugs and outlets are up to date

Make sure you get an electrician to help you with ensuring plugs and outlets are up to date and can handle blow dryers or multiple hair styling tools at a time. Also, having white walls is helpful, as paint colors can bounce off of your skin and cast unwanted tones. - ONLO Beauty

8. Avoid setting up your makeup space in your bathroom

The number one place to avoid setting up your makeup would be the bathroom, which is where most of us love to set up. The humidity and moisture created in the bathroom can wreak havoc on your brushes and limit the lifespan of your products. Also, the lighting in bathrooms tends to be too warm. The best place to set up is somewhere with a ton of natural light and a place to sit down. Sitting will give you more balance and is better for your back. - Emma Hughes Makeup Artistry

9. Paint walled in neutral tones

In order to receive the maximum amount of light, paint your walls in muted/neutral colors. For the ultimate organizer, acrylic storage solutions are ideal with their ability to easily identify and display makeup products and tools. - Faces of Virtue

10. Ensure your space has balanced lighting

For the perfect makeup room, balanced lighting is extremely important. If you have one side of your face lit more than the other, it can lead to uneven coverage or product overapplication. As for storing your products, although it looks lovely to have your makeup on the top of the desk or counter, cream products such as lipstick, foundations, blushes, highlighters, mascara, etc., should be stored out of heat and sunlight to preserve longevity. Melting cream makeups can change the consistency or weaken preservatives. Powder products are generally fine to display and keep out. - Madeline Rouge
